SPARK alumnus

Students Promoting Awareness of Research Knowledge (SPARK) is a unique program in the University of Guelph's Office of Research that trains students to communicate research to the public. Directed by Dr. Owen Roberts, SPARK has translated UofG research using articles, radio & videos for academia, government, industry, and the popular press since 1989.

My 4 years as a SPARK writer taught me the importance of communicating research findings & the practical skills to do so in a way that's fun and engaging. I had the opportunity to interview fascinating researchers across every discipline, and even cover research stories abroad. The lessons learned (& friends made) at SPARK last a lifetime!

University of Guelph Publications

SPARK produces UofG's biannual Research Magazine as well as the Agri-Food Yearbook in partnership with OMAFRA. I had the chance to coordinate the Winter 2011 issue of Research Magazine: Focus on Human Health & Disease.

Academic & Industry Publications

SPARK writers contribute to many publications including SHARCKNet's SHARC Bytes, Greenhouse Canada Magazine, Ontario Milk Producer, and Ontario Grain Farmer as well as the Advanced Food and Materials Network's ADVANCE Magazine. (check out the issue I coordinated here)

SPARK Air also produces short research videos! (I made some way back in the day, but unfortunately you'll need headphones if you're watching on your mobile device #retro)
